Watching Stephan Kesting's fantastic iPhone grappling / BJJ app: Submission Defence: How to Tap Out Less Often, I thought I'd do an experiment and watch all the 36 submission defences but not in the usual fashion - trying to learn the jiujitsu material provided. Instead, I watched them with the intention to find the common denominator between all the submission prevention strategies and filter them to a submission prevention posture or postures. Basically I wanted to answer this question:
Where should my arms, head, hips, feet...etc. when grappling be to avoid getting submitted with a choke, armbar, shoulder lock or leg / foot lock?
Put differently, what is the safest Submission Prevention Posture or Postures?
I love doing things like that, simply because I'm no expert and I don't usually have the opportunity to train often enough to learn all the possible techniques that full timers do so what do I do? I focus on learning the most important common denominators between all the important postures and pressures in Brazilian jiujitsu.
The 12 submissions Stephan covers in the £2.49* app are:
1. Armbar from guard
2. Armbar from top position (mount or side control)
3. Triangle choke from guard
4. Omoplata shoulder lock
5. Guillotine choke from guard - Kesting guillotine choke defence YouTube
6. Arm triangle choke
7. Rear naked choke
8. Americana / V-armlock
9. Kimura from guard
10. Kimura from top
11. Kneebar
12. Straight footlock
Here's a nice clip: Defence and escape from the Rear Naked Choke:

BJJ Interview: The Part Time Grappler Interviews BJJ Black Belt Mr Felipe Costa
I was talking to my good friend Mr Eddie Kone the other day about training, improvements and the subject of fast tracking progress came up. I'm very excited about the BJJ app for iPhone and android phones he is releasing soon but Eddie had something much more exciting to tell me about. BJJ CAMP!
Eddie took his gang over to Brazil 2 years or so ago where they took part in Felipe Costa's BJJ CAMP. 10 days of BJJ in the birth country of Arte Suave. Felipe is one of the leaders of BJJ team BRASA and multiple world, PanAm and Brazil champion medalist (not to mention a great instructor and humanitarian). Eddie suggested I contact Felipe for and interview and here we go.

BJJ Интервью с Эдди Коне: iPhone приложение для BJJ / MMA
Another dear friend, and a fearless warrior, helped translate my BJJ interview with Royler Gracie Black Belt Mr Eddie Kone to Russian. Thank you Elena!

Brazil Jiu Jitsu/Grappling Hírek! BJJ alkalmazás iPhone-ra! Interjú Eddie Kone-al, Royler Gracie fekete övesével
A friend helped translate my interview with Royler Gracie black belt Mr Eddie Kone (regarding the upcoming BJJ app for iPhones and other android phones) to Hungarian. While I believe there will be a huge demand for Eddie Kone's series of BJJ apps both here in the UK, in Brazil and also in the US, I think the biggest demand will be in countries yet to enjoy abundant instructors of this caliber. I have asked for a few more translations which I will be sharing you soon. For the time being, thanks Tamas for your great help.

As promised, I give you my interview with Mr James Gregory, purple belt in BJJ and demo partner on the upcoming BJJ app for iPhone and android phones with Royler Gracie BJJ Black Belt Mr Eddie Kone. James is a tough tough roll but a very nice guy: Best combo!

Are you currently working / studying? Is that Full time / Part time?
I currently work fulltime managing a small corporate gymnasium and I also study a degree in exercise physiology part time, it's a busy life! I would say that I study Jiu Jitsu part time also and it's probably as hard as my degree!
You also set aside time to practice a sport. Which sport(s)?
Well my main sporting practice is Jiu Jitsu, but I also weight train on a regular basis and enjoy kettlebell lifting which I also teach.

BJJ / Grappling Interview: Atama Europe's Mr Pedro Barcellos Talks to The Part Time Grappler
As previously promised, here is my interview with Mr Pedro Barcellos from Atama Europe, the man behind the collaboration between Royler Gracie black belt Eddie Kone and Atama Europe in the upcoming iPhone and android phone BJJ app: Beyond Blue belt.
I must stress here that Eddie advises me that the App will be suitable for android phones too, not just iPhones. Check out the new blog dedicated to the app.
Hello. Why don’t we start by you telling us a little about yourself?
Hello, my name is Pedro Barcellos. I'm 36 years old and I am from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Are you currently working / studying? Is that Full time / Part time?
After graduating in Business Administration and Computer Programing I am now a full time worker, running 3 companies and dedicating myself to a new project which is developing the Atama Kimonos brand in Europe.
You also set aside time to practice a sport. Which sport(s)?
Sure, it's very important to save a couple of hours of your day to invest in your health, I am a BJJ Black Belt since 2005, completely addicted to the sport and still training a lot. I also a surf and work out.
How long have you done that?
I started training in 1995 and since then I never stopped. I used to compete a lot but had to stop when I started going to college and working at the same time, I had no time left to train and prepare myself for competition level.
What do you feel the ATAMA gi brand stands for?
I think Atama stands for tradition, quality and performance. Backed up by more than 20 years of experience, always innovating and leading the industry.
It has come to my attention that you are also involved in quite a project with a friend of mine, Mr Eddie Kone. Please tell us what it is and how you got involved?
Yes, Eddie contacted us a while ago and gave us the honor to participate in his new project, a revolutionary I-Phone App showing competition tested Jiu Jitsu positions. Being a Jiu Jitsu practitioner and an I-Phone user I immediately joined Eddie on the project and tried to support as much as I could. The idea itself was already great but when I looked at the quality of the project I got totally stoked, this is something I've never seen before and I'm sure it will be a huge success.
Finally, why do you train and do what you do? What drives you?
Good question. I believe that in life we need to keep a good balance between 3 aspects, the physical, the professional and the spiritual. What makes Jiu Jitsu an amazing sport is that it will help you get this balance on all 3 aspects.
You'll get in the best shape of your life (physical).
You can make a good living of Jiu Jitsu like myself or if you work in another area the self confidence acquired will help you a lot pursuing your goals and dealing with stress situations (Professional)
You'll get the peace of mind that that will help a lot on your spiritual.
Not to mention all the fun you'll have, the good friends for life you'll make, the adrenaline, that good feeling after training, so many good things, honor, respect and persistence, values you'll take for life and pass along to your kids.
Jiu Jitsu is the key to a good life!
Thank you Pedro for being generous with your time.

BJJ / Grappling News! BJJ app for the iPhone - Interview with Royler Gracie Black Belt Eddie Kone
As promised earlier (well, half a day late but still!) I have big, huge, ginormus news!
As soon as I posted on the Part Time Grappler and on Facebook that I was disappointed with the lack of BJJ apps for the iPhone or iPod touch, my phone started ringing! Literally within half an hour of hitting "Publish Post" I got a call from none other than Mr Eddie Kone, BJJ black belt under Royler Gracie and a frequent feature on this blog.
Eddie and the EKBJJ Association had great news to tell me about a project he's been working on. He is soon to release his first BJJ app for the iPhone: The Mount. I asked Eddie for some time to prepare an interview and called him back later and this is what was said: (are you at the edge of your goddam seat yet?!)

BJJ Online Resources and iPhone Apps
A couple of days ago I posted on Facebook how there's so much rubbish BJJ online and a lot of the reactions I received agreed with me. As a Part Time Grappler, time is my most precious resource. I don't want to waste it on YouTube clips that either teach me nothing or, even worse, something wrong.
I recently received a wonderful iPod touch from my wife as a Christmas gift and it's the best thing ever (thank you!). The first thing I uploaded to it was Saulo's Revolution 2 - the turtle position*. I watch that thing every morning now on the way to work and it has given me immediate and fantastic results.
There's only one problem: downloading the discs to the computer, converting them to Mpeg4 and uploading them to a iPod friendly version on iTunes takes AGES! THAT'S JUST FOR ONE DISC. This is not to mention that the discs do not come cheap**
I thought to myself I know! I'll look for some good BJJ / Grappling apps. Apps are much quicker to download and play instantly and with it being 2011 surely there are hundreds of great BJJ apps to choose from.
Is there? Is there heck!
Yes I found two or three but they were either discontinued, had bad reviews, subscription based, expensive or promotional***. I am starving for some good BJJ apps for the iPod touch. Something that'll cost under a £5er and offer me solutions, hints and tips. Something that helps me build a game. not "here's an armbar from guard and a footlock from side control. Wanna learn how to link them? Buy my shizzle"
Any recommendations out there good people?
(this just in. Graham Cooke of Blog Fu recently did a post on the matter of BJJ Apps so check it out!)

*Actually, the first thing I downloaded was Angry Birds :)
**Even if you are a cheap-skate and you download them illegally, it has a cost in quality and time
***I don't mind ones where you can try it for free or have one or two techniques for free but not $1.99 and then $4.99 for updates.
