BJJ / Grappling Tips: How to leglock like Garry Tonon

Leg locks of all variety are gaining a huge momentum in both Brazilian jiujitsu, MMA and of course Submission Grappling. There are many different ways to attacks the joints of the leg such as straight foot locks, heel hooks, figure - 4 footlocks, knee bars...etc. But how can we learn to leglock like a champion of Garry Tonon? Well you need to know how to set up the leg lock from a variety of positions. In this video we see the standard basic entry to the straight foot lock from the open guard by Professor Ryron Gracie, head instructor at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, California:

What is often missed when entering the foot lock (and the guillotine, as Garry explains below) is the invisible details during the transitions. These are the details that will win or lose the leg lock battle:

Kron Rickson Gracie MMA FIGHT Hideo Tokoro

Rizin FF have started booking matches for their next event (late September 2016)- Rizin Fighting World Grand-Prix 2016. The first advertised (and largest draw) fight is one involving Kron Gracie (2-0) and Hideo Tokoro (33-28)

BJJ / Grappling tips: Kron Gracie's guard

Master Rickson Gracie, Grandmaster Helio Gracie
and professor Kron Gracie
Kron Gracie has an amazing all-round jiujitsu game. He is fantastic from every position and attacks with submissions with seemingly reckless abandon, but having spent a few hours learning from both Master Rickson and some of Kron's and Rickson's black belt representatives in Amsterdam*, not to mention the fantastic work by my own teacher Eddie Kone who's learnt from several of Grandmaster Helio's sons, I'm really starting to believe that none of it reckless and Kron's jiujitsu game, very much like that of his father Master Rickson Gracie, builds on a deep understanding of the levers of jiujitsu.

First of all, have a look at this match between Kron and the formidable Leandro Lo from the IBJJF Worlds 2011. In particular, start watching from 3:13 after Leandro sweeps Kron and you will see how Kron connects his spine, thru his hands and legs, to Leandro, frustrating his pass attempts.

Kron Gracie MMA Debut: Breakdown Analysis

Jiujitsu and grappling phenom Kron Gracie, son of the founder of the Jiujitsu Global Federation, the legendary Rickson Gracie and grandson of the co-founder of Gracie Jiujitsu grand-master Helio Gracie, recently fought his MMA debut against Kim Hyung Su of Korea in the Japanese promotion "Real Fight Championships". You can watch the fight below:

Here's my breakdown of the fight as I saw it:

Training Gracie Jiujitsu at EKBJJ HQ

This Monday I spent just under 6 hours on the mats with several regional instructors going thru the self defence curriculum of Gracie jiujitsu under the watchful eyes of Eddie Kone, head instructor of the EKBJJ Association and what an experience that was. Mind blown indeed.

BJJ / Grappling Interview: Luta Fightwear and Fight For Peace: Mr Fergus Dullaghan Part 2

As I mentioned in an earlier post the Part Time Grappler blog has had the great pleasure to interview a representative for LUTA Fightwear (who are sponsoring our upcoming seminar with former UFC heavyweight champion Mr Frank Mir down at Fight Fit Manchester, Manchester’s premium BJJ and MMA gym) and the global charity Fight For Peace, Mr Fergus Dullaghan. I got my interview questions answered over emails from Fergus but I was so excited by what he had to say that I followed them up with a phone call and man does he have some stories! Here is the second and final part of the interview. I hope you enjoy it.

Part Time Interview

Do you compete in your sport(s)? Have you won any competitions?

Yes quite a few, I won the All-Ireland Judo Championships in January four days after competing in the BJJ Europeans (at blue belt). I've won the Malta Judo Open and London International Judo Open (seni), the Spanish BJJ open and meddled in things like the Scottish, Welsh, Irish and Northern Irish judo opens and placed in the British Judo Open. I've also competed in other judo internationals like the Swiss, Finnish and Swedish opens.

What is the greatest thrill you have gotten out of practicing your sport?

Getting my black belt in judo was good. So was getting my second dan. I also really enjoyed the day I got my invite to join the Welsh team in the post - that meant a lot to me and I still have the letter. At one point I was ranked 4th in the UK (May-Oct.2008) and seeing that result posted on the internet was awesome. But there are other simple things about martial arts that are really great, like the people you meet and the things you learn about yourself and life. I've been very lucky because of the journalism side of things. I've had dinner with Emin Boztepe (Wing Tsun Grand master), chatted on the phone with Ken Shamrock, rolled with Ryron, Royce, Rolker and Kron Gracie at different times, appeared in a video instructional with former world Judo champion Neil Adams (who is one of my coaches), and I'm meeting Mr Frank Mir down at Fight Fit Manchester, Manchester’s premium BJJ and MMA gym).

(Liam's note: If you're just not sure who this Kron (son of Rickson) Gracie character is, check him out in this video clip doing his thang at the 2011 BJJ Mundial!)

Amazing Balls!

Yes I'm a great advocate of Unstable Base Training but I must admit I've never seen anything like this fella:

Mr Abmar Barbosa training on the Swiss-Ball

This is the man who (amongst many other accomplishments) beat Kron Gracie 11-0!

Can you see why?

A big thanks goes of course to Georgette Oden for directing me to this link.

I Stole A Technique. Can You See It?

at exactly 10:42 Kron does something with his left leg to block the Mount escape. Can you see it?

I have never been shown, taught or even visualised this. This is something I completely and utterly stole and I'm so chuffed.

Let me know what you think.
