Where should I grip in BJJ? Grip Fighting 101

Gripping and grabbing is such an inescapable part of jiu-jitsu, grappling and by extension all fighting. There are many reasons why we would choose to establish a grip. This could be to sink in a collar choke, to extended a limb or even to defend against the opponent’s own aggression.

While the practical applications of gripping (cloth) or grabbing (body part) are endless, the mechanical reason should always be the same:

To define the end of the lever.

A lever is an inflexible rod that bridges between the mover (Force) and what needs to be moved (Load) around a rotation point (Fulcrum). The further away from the fulcrum we apply the force, the less force we need to move the load and vice versa.

You will often hear instructors referring to finding the “end of the lever”. This is because the further away you are from the fulcrum, less force you will need to move the load. Therefore, it stands to reason that there are better and worse places to grip and grab. Below is an introduction to the better places to grip and grab and while indeed there are others to investigate, these should form the foundation of anyone’s gripping strategy.

  1. The collar. If you are looking to control posture, the spine is your lever. The end of the lever is as high as possible on the collar, close to the label, because that puts you the furthest away from the fulcrum (the hips). Gripping any lower will not be optimal and to grab any higher you’d need to abandon the gi and control the back of the head.
  2. The seam of the sleeve just above the elbow. If you are looking to control the lateral movement, the upper arm is your lever. The end of the lever is as low as possible on the seam at the back of the arm, close to, but just above, the elbow, because that puts you the furthest away from the fulcrum (the shoulder).
  3. The cuff of the sleeve just above the wrist. If you are looking to control the movement of their hand, the lower arm is your lever. The end of the lever is as low as possible on the sleeve, at the cuff, (or even the wrist or the hand itself) because that puts you the furthest away from the fulcrum (the elbow).
  4. The bunched up material at the outside (or inside) of the bent knee. If you are looking to control the guard recovery, the thigh is your lever. The end of the lever is as low as possible on the pants, immediately outside, or inside, the knee, because that puts you the furthest away from the fulcrum (the hips).
  5. The cuff of the pants just above the foot. If you are looking to control the movement of their foot, the lower leg is your lever. The end of the lever is as low as possible on the pant leg, at the cuff, (or even grabbing over the arch of the foot) because that puts you the furthest away from the fulcrum (the knee).

As expected, there are other minor grip locations (such as various locations on the belt etc.) that serve other, perhaps more niche purposes. I will talk more about these in a future article.

BJJ DVD Review: Rafael Lovato JR Guard Mastery

Rafael Lovato JR Guard Mastery DVDs Review:

Short Review: This is a sport gi jiujitsu set. This is not universal for no gi, self defence or MMA. Having said that, it is an excellent one at that. If you are brand new beginner, this set will be overwhelming. I personally think this is a great set for the competition oriented purple or brown belt or even higher but not necessarily the first set to buy as a white / blue belt grappler.

Disc 1: 1hour, 25 minutes

The DVD starts with Rafael explaining how he morphed from a strong guard player to the pressure guard passer, raised under the prodigees Saulo and Xande Ribiero, that we now know him to be. This is a much appreciated segment as viewers get to see a different side of the black belt and not just technique after technique. We get a sneak peak into the mind and the evolutionary journey of this jiujitsuka.

1. Xande Sweep: Xande used this flower sweep to defeat Marcelo Garcia at the 2004 worlds. Rafael does a good job of sharing all the grip-hip-move-timing details that are so vital to jiujitsu.

2. Follow-up: Rafael acknowledges that posting isn't always enough to stop the sweep, but nonetheless shows how to take advantage of the post and shows a very smooth back take and a bonus mount technique. The grip he uses is not NoGi friendly, but adjusting it shouldn't be too difficult. The instruction is, ala Saulo, very detail rich.

3. Arm bar: Building off the opponent's natural reactions to the danger of the back take, Rafael shows how to isolate and lock the opponent's nearside arm. Again, I'm very impressed with Rafael's ability to articulate everything he's doing. Jiujitsu instruction extraordinaire.

4. Pendulum Sweep: 2008 Pan Ams. Rafael Lovato Jr v Roberto Tussa Alencar. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it:

BJJ Tips: IBJJF competition rules & illegal submissions

When competing in BJJ it is vital to understand the rules of the event. As more and more events are adapting the IBJJF rules and since two of my friends and team mates are competing at the upcoming British Open this weekend, I thought I'd look at what's allowed for white, blue, purple, brown and black belts submission wise.

If you scroll down the IBJJF rules document to the page were penalties are outlined, you get a breakdown of what is allowed for which BJJ belt. See the screenshot below*

But that doesn't really look very simple and straight forward, at least not to a slow fella like me so I decided to flip it around (chart screenshot below):

Crazy Ass BJJ Gi Design Competition Winner: The Pin-Up Gi Arrives!

I received my beautiful Pin-up gi on Monday. I finally built the courage up to take her out of the bag on Tuesday. After much chatting and wine, well, I don't like to touch boobie and tell but...

This one is deffo a keeper. A huge thank you to Seymour "Meerkatsu" Yang for involving me in the project, Tatami Fightwear for always looking after me and for having the cahoonies to sponsor the competition and bring this amazing design to life and for Evan Mannweiler for being so freaking talented and creative.

One of my passions within Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the community and the Crazy Ass BJJ Gi Design competition that Meerkatsu and I ran recently (sponsored by Tatami Fightwear) was a great example of an event that not only drew people together and garnered attention from practitioners around the globe and was discussed on The Fightworks Podcast, but it also opened the gates for peoples’ creativity. Judging the submissions was not an easy feat and the judges banged their heads together for a long time. As you all know, three winners were decided upon:

Judging the submissions was not an easy feat and the judges banged their heads together for a long time. As you all know, three winners were decided upon:

ULTIMATE WINNER:

Evan Mannweiler with 'Pin up '
Evan will get his gi custom made by Tatami Fightwear.

CRAZY WINNER:

Aaron Shiels with 'Scorpion'
Aaron wins an Estilo Premier gi

FUNNY WINNER:

Francisco Arias with 'I'm Lovin' Jitz'
Francisco wins a Zero G gi

For picture of the winning designs you can check out our competition blog.

But I want more. I always want more. I contacted the three winners and asked if they’d be interested in an interview. Luckily, they were excited by the idea and very generous with their time. The resulting BJJ interviews are both very interesting, very diverse and very educating! I'm now inthe final stages of editing the interviews (they were huge!) and part one (of four) will hit a screen near you before the end of this week!

Stay tuned, I say.

The Crazy Ass BJJ Gi Design Comp featured on The Fightworks Podcast!!!

Hi. My name is Liam Wandi, the Part Time Grappler. I'm a cheese-Addict.

Yes it's true. I wear a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi to bed. (Thank you Tatami Fightwear!)

But it's also true that the Crazy Ass BJJ Gi Design Competition, masterminded by my brother in madness BJJ Purple Belt and BJJ gi-reviewer extraordinaire Seymour Yang, of the Meerkatsu fame, was featured on the acclaimed Fightworks Podcast. Oh yes. You know you made it big when you make it on the FWP!

Click on the link to download and listen to Seymour telling Caleb and the world about how a mad idea ping-ponged between the two of us lead to the Most Awesome BJJ Gi Design Competition of the century!

Many thanks to Seymour for the hours of work behind this and for giving me a chance to help and of course to Tatami Fightwear for making this dream becoming a reality and for being so generous (THEY'RE MAKING THE FREAKING WINNING GI!!) but above all...

Thank you all crazy creative people who took the time, energy and skillz to put together an enormous portfolio of ideas. Judging was a pleasure but no easy task.

You, truly, put the ART in Martial Arts.

Finishing Armbars from Guard in BJJ / Grappling

One thought I always keep in the background when I'm rolling / drilling is: is this the most efficient way to do what I'm doing? While that certainly sounds nice, it can be interpreted in more than one way.

Am I using my whole body?
Am I using too much or too little muscle?
Am I using the right ones and only them?
Am I working 3-4 steps ahead or am I simply reacting to my partner?

And so on. I urge you to come up with a few of your own interpretations.

I was watching an old video, Arm-Locks, and Mr Harris showed a beautiful way to use your whole body and principles from weight lifting (the leg press to be exact) to finish the spinning armbar from guard against the stack. I share that with you here.

They've stacked you and hugged your head. Your back is not strong enough for your legs to push their weight away from you, but your hands are not being utilised

Use both hands on your knees to help you with the difficult first couple of inches. Utilise a popping motion to help push their weight off you.

From there you have a choice of straight-armbarring the near-side arm by pressing down the elbow or just going back to your original armbar on the far arm (with or without throwing them on their back)

Where else in BJJ / Grappling are you leaving a hand or a foot (or a hip or a shoulder or even your head) without use?
Oh, don't forget to visit the Crazy-Ass BJJ Gi Design Challenge Blog and submit your fab designs! Over 1200 visitors can't be wrong.

Design Your Own Crazy-Ass BJJ Gi

I'm always marvelled at how many wonderfully talented individuals walk on the tatami of BJJ clubs, academies and gyms all over the world. Fighters care what they wear as it becomes an expression of them, an extension of their character.

Look, for instance, at the contrast between the crazy stylings of Mike Fowler and how it contrasts with the reserved traditional aura surrounding Rickson or Rorion Gracie.

I've always been one for individual expression and after long conversations with my friend Seymour, of the Meerkatsu fame, we decided to run a competition. An Arts Competition: Design your dream gi.

But us being us- nutters, in a word!- we decided to go frikking FULL OUT! So I present to you:

THE CRAZY-ASS DESIGN YOUR DREAM GI COMPETITION.

We’re making Videos on YouTube

We’re uploading Photos!

We’re advertising on BJJ media worldwide!!

We’re recruiting Crazy Ass Talented Celebrities to submit designs!!!

We’re bringing in Prizes. Good Prizes! Crazy Good Prizes!! Crazy-Ass Good Prizes!!!

But of course most importantly, we are inviting YOU, ALL OF YOU, to participate!

Send your best, crazyeee-est most innovative Gi Design and we’ll whack it on a brand new intergalactically superconnected blog and pin it against the best submissions out there.

What the hell are you waiting for? Download the empty canvas below, and go to town on it!

Here are our first submission from the awesome Julia Johansen. They might help you get the creative juices flowing:

Also, remember to check out Meerkatsu: Seymour’s blog, for even more information!

More...So so much more to come!

I wasn't lying when I said AMAZING THINGS IN THE PIPELINE!!!!

Here's a tease. It's just a quick one I whacked together:

Gi Design Tavling!!!

http://crazy-ass-bjj-gi-challenge.blogspot.com/p/how-to-enter.html
