BJJ Self Defence: Mestre Sylvio Behring

Some jiujitsu academies teach only sport jiujitsu while others teach the self defence curriculum alongside the sport techniques, barely paying lip-service to the raison d'être of jiujitsu. Very few academies, however, manage to keep both alive.

The video below of Master Sylvio Behring  you see exactly that. The stand up phase is addressed using the traditional techniques of self defence against an opponent trying to grab, pull, push, rush and even strike you. By manipulating the distance, you can stay safe and apply your jiujitsu. Master Behring's video really made me happy.

This is how the stand-up techniques of self defence of Gracie jiujitsu are blended with ground fighting at my own professor's academy: EKBJJ down in London. This is why grading tests consist of a thorough review of the whole curriculum followed by sparring in the following formats:

1. Gi sparring: No gloves & no strikes - sportive setting
2. Gi sparring: Opponent wears gloves and strikes - self defence against a striking opponent
3. No Gi sparring: Opponent wears gloves and strikes - self defence against a striking opponent without relying on the gi

The first step is, naturally to familiarise yourself with the Gracie Jiujitsu self defence curriculum. Learn how to deal with grabs and strikes against a cooperative opponent then build it up slowly from there. The next step is to add flow from the stand-up to the ground phase, still with a cooperative opponent and slowly build it up again. Finally, you can mix it up. If in the first two phases the opponent made his intentions clear (I'm now grabbing your lapel / sleeve / throwing a punch...etc. Go ahead and respond) the next stage is for the opponent to surprise you or even change his attack midway (grabs your sleeve but quickly changes to a headlock or goes for a punch then switches to a double leg takedown or sneaks up behind you for a choke). Slowly slowly building the pace.

It's a very safe and enjoyable way to train self defence without abandoning the sportive grappling aspects of jiujitsu.
