I
recently visited a gym run by an old jiujitsu friend of mine: Mr
Anthony Griffiths, or Griff as I've come to know him over the last 10
years. Griff is an accomplished jiujitsu practitioner (brown belt user
the Combat Base group headed by Metamoris referee Mr Chris Haueter) and a
competitive freestyle wrestler, not to mention a very articulate coach
and, most importantly to me: one of the nicest people I've ever met.
I've
wanted to visit Griff's place, named Viva Combat Athletics in Ashton, Greater Manchester, for some
time and while I have half term break from school I went to visit him,
only to find out that his gym is actually just a few tram stops away
from where I work so I will be visiting him more during the school
term. Check them out on Facebook.
Griff started the
session (daytime nogi grappling 11.30-12.30) with a very thorough warm
up followed up by a detailed breakdown of how to isolate the arms from
the mount, climbing to high mount, and then moved on the mounted armbar
and the rolling omoplata. Check out this excellent omoplata tutorial by Stephan Kesting for some deep details.
If you want details, go see Griff at Viva Combat Athletics. We finished the session with a couple of rounds of
rolling. It was great to exchange energy with an old friend.
If you live in Ashton or within commuting distance then I highly recommend you visit Viva Combat Athletics and try a class. You will have a great time, learn a great sport and be in the company of great people.
As you come around the roundabout you will see this banner. Turn Right.
This is what you will see. Walk closer.
